The latest Volkswagen Golf has just gone on sale. The Golf 8 is Volkswagen’s most connected car so far. Initially, only two trim levels will be available; Life and Style with the R-Line joining the lineup further down the line. Two petrol engines and two diesel engines are available at launch; two 1.5-litre petrol engines with 130PS and 150PS respectively, both come with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and two 2.0-litre diesels 115PS and 150PS, the 115PS diesel will come with the 6-speed manual too, while the 150PS version will come with the 7-speed DSG transmission and only be available in the Style trim level.

More engines will be available in the coming months, including 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI petrol engines and eTSI 48V mild-hybrid 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines. These eTSI engines will come with only the 7-speed DSG transmission available.

Every Golf 8 will be fitted with the Car2X technology, this allows the Golf to communicate wirelessly with other cars fitted with the system to detect hazards on the road ahead including stationary traffic and emergency vehicles approaching.

Life trim is expected to be the best seller in the UK, coming with 16” “Norfolk” alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, parking sensor on both front and rear, heated door mirrors with memory feature and keyless start. Keyless entry is also available as a £400 option. Ambient lighting features too, giving the driver 10 different colours to customise the interior.

The Golf Life uses Volkswagen’s Innovision Cockpit, incorporating a 10.25” Active Info Display in the instrument cluster, a 10” Touchscreen is also used in the Discover Navigation infotainment system. The Discover Pro Navigation will be equipped in all 2020 models, featuring DAB and FM radio, USB and BlueTooth connectivity with Wireless App-Connect. A 3-year subscription to We Connect Plus is also included, making available services such as media streaming to parking space information and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot. Wireless phone charging has been added too, easier to use voice control using less formal language allows many of the vehicle’s features to be used without having to touch a button.

Safety systems on the Golf Life include; Adaptive Cruise Control, a Driver Alert System, Dynamic Road Sign Display, Lane Assist and Front Assist, with greater pedestrian protection measures, are also installed.

The Style trim level offers some benefits, such as; 17” “Belmont” alloy wheels and LED “Plus” headlights give a sharper look to the front of the car. Sports comfort seats are added with premium “Art Velours” fabric, more ambient lighting and “Luxury Brown Wood” inserts have been added.
